AUG-buyer questions.
Main Post:
- I see ‘pre-bans’ on Gunbroker. What exactly are those?
- Differences between A1, A2, and A3? Which one is the ‘best’?
- Negatives associated with the AUG? How does it compare to an AR-15?
- Good third party triggers/charging handles?
- I hear the plastic gets worn out at the ejection port. Are there any parts that mitigate that?
Top Comment: Pre-ban rifles are those that were imported before the ban on semi-auto long guns not deemed to have a "sporting purpose." This was an executive order implemented by George HW Bush in 1989. These rifles can be more desirable to people who live in states where they would otherwise be banned, but were made early enough that they're grandfathered in. In the specific case of the AUG, once they were banned from import, the only AUG you could buy brand new on the market were MSAR copies, which are generally not as high of quality as the Steyr rifles. Steyr imports are once again available to buy new outside of ban states, so I'd probably just get one of those unless you can find a good deal on an older one. There's also much hype surrounding the Australian-made copy of the AUG being released in the US, but there's basically no news on when those will be available The AUG A1 features a non-detachable fixed power scope. The A2 has a section of rail where the scope on the A1 would be. The A3 has a different bolt release and different style of optics rail. Weak points of the AUG compared to an AR are of course much smaller aftermarket. You're pretty much going to be stuck with the mushy bullpup trigger. Other caliber options are pretty much off the table. Unless you get a "NATO" AUG, magazines will not be compatible. Any replacement parts will need to be OEM
Finally picked up the rifle I’ve wanted since I was 10 - a Steyr AUG

Steyr AUG A3 M1, Trijicon ACOG TA31F 4x32 on a GDI QD mount, sitting all pretty against a fence post in the desert.
